[00:00:01] Jessica: Hey, friend, welcome to Perspectives into Practice, a place where life's stories meet practical wisdom. Together, we'll explore how faith filled perspectives can transform the way we live, love, and grow.
So grab a seat, settle in, and join us on this journey to turn inspiration into action.
Let's dive in foreign.
Hey, friend, welcome back to Perspectives into Practice. Prayer is one of those things that can become so familiar that sometimes we don't even stop to think about how we're approaching it. We pray for our families, our circumstances, the things that are weighing us down in our hearts, and the needs that we see around us. But how often do we actually slow down long enough to really talk with God about what's on our heart and then give ourselves time to listen? My new friend, Donna has been experiencing a shift in her prayer life lately. God has been encouraging her to be more intentional with what she's bringing to him and about the time that she's spending with him. And I just love that so much because it isn't just something that she's talking about. It's actually changing the way that she's approaching her everyday life. So, friend, I hope that you will enjoy our conversation as we talk about growing in our relationship with God through prayer, learning to ask boldly while trusting his wisdom, and making room to recognize what he's doing in our lives right now. Donna, welcome. I'm so glad that you're here.
[00:01:32] Donna: Jessica, thank you so much for having me. I'm really excited to chat with you today.
[00:01:36] Jessica: Me too. I'm. I'm excited to talk about this topic of prayer because even though we talk about prayer, like, throughout a lot of our episodes, this one I feel like is going a lot deeper than that. And I'm excited. But before we dive into that, y' all know I love a good, fun fact. And Donna, first of all, I just found out that you love flamingos as much as me, which is amazing. But you also love to match your tennis shoes and, like, fun eyeglass toppers with your outfits, which is so amazing, and it just shows so much about your personality. So I have to ask, what collection that you have is bigger shoes or eyeglasses? And now that I know flamingos or flamingos.
[00:02:18] Donna: Okay. So I would actually have to say it's probably my eyeglass frames, and it was one that I started just a few years ago, honestly. And it's become almost an addiction. It's kind of bad, but I figure I could be addicted to so many other things. So if eyeglass frames and shoes are them, then I'M really okay.
But I absolutely love them. I don't know how many I have, but you could see they come off.
And yesterday I had a green pair on for green out for mental health.
So it just depends on. On the day. And if my shoes can match it, it's even better.
I really think it's become a sickness as I get older. I'm, you know, my 50s now, and I'm like, I'm just making this next, you know, half of century. I'm going
[00:02:57] Jessica: to
[00:02:58] Donna: make it fun and just live boldly and all the sparkle I can have and just have fun with it.
[00:03:05] Jessica: Yes. I love that I.
I wish that I wore glasses to be cool enough to wear those, but I know that my eyes are definitely changing, and so I'm going to need readers sooner than I would like to admit, so maybe I could have fun with my readers because.
[00:03:20] Donna: Yes,
[00:03:21] Jessica: because
[00:03:23] Donna: I have contacts and I used to wear them because I never wanted to wear glasses. But I got to the point where I need the readers and the glasses. And so if I
[00:03:30] Jessica: had
[00:03:30] Donna: my contacts in, I found myself doing this all the time. And so I was like,
[00:03:33] Jessica: I'm
[00:03:34] Donna: just gonna go to the glasses and I'm gonna embrace it. So here we are.
[00:03:36] Jessica: Yes. Well, they look great. They look great. And you. Do you match everything. Guys, y' all can't see her, but she's wearing, like, all brown with, like, tortoise shell. It's just. They're so cute. I love it.
[00:03:47] Donna: Thanks.
[00:03:47] Jessica: I love it so much. So let's dive in. So we are. We are talking about how you are learning to be so much more intentional with your conversations with God, especially when it comes to what you're asking him for. So what was happening in your life when you started realizing that God was inviting you to approach prayer in a different way?
[00:04:07] Donna: It's funny, because I do think that in life we go through seasons, right? Like, there's seasons of our lives where our prayer life is better than they are in other seasons. And, um, we kind of. We still do the. We still go through the motions. We're still checking the boxes. I mean, our faith doesn't change. It's just our relationship with Jesus ebbs and flows, I think. And so years ago, I joined a group of women, and we started the. This. This group called the Fives. And we prayed five days a week at 5am for five weeks.
And
[00:04:39] Jessica: I
[00:04:39] Donna: remembered I'm not a morning person. And so this was really hard.
But what was great about it, it was. It was women from all Over. So it wasn't. We just did it through group me. So you're sitting in your chair and somebody gets, sends you a prayer prompt. You pray over that for an hour. And then in the group me, you just send a little chat back of what did God speak to you in that morning?
And to see these women begin to share so many things, it was great. But that was, you know, that's probably 10 years ago that I did that.
And then I guess recently, in the last, probably 10 weeks even, I've just felt, I'm like, when did I feel the closest to God? And so I started reflecting on this time in my life and one of my friends and I, we both looked at each other and we were like, when we did the fives. And so we've actually brought that back. We started doing 5ish for a little bit until, until we asked some other women to join us in, in this. And it's been incredible. And we just finished our first five week session together and, and it was just the vulnerability that you get behind women when you sit down and you pray together even, even if you're, I mean, and the difference that God speaks for one prayer prompt to several different women is incredible.
[00:05:53] Jessica: Yeah.
[00:05:53] Donna: But the other thing that changed it for me recently is have you ever read the book Circle Maker?
[00:05:59] Jessica: Yes, I have.
[00:06:00] Donna: I had never read it. This book has crossed my desk I don't know how many times. And I keep just tossing it. I'm like, it's just a small book. Like, what can it do? It's not gonna change.
[00:06:10] Jessica: It's so small. Yeah.
[00:06:12] Donna: And it's just a tiny little one. And I was like, I, I'll read it later, I'll read it later. And we're going through some things just in our life right now. We're building a house that I promise you, it seems like it has taken forever to get it together.
And we're expecting, we're expecting God to do some incredible things in this house with us. And so we're excited about it. My daughter recently is found out she was pregnant. And, and so I just started looking at, you know what I. So I read Circle Maker and I started looking at what does it mean to boldly ask for the things that we want from God. Like he wants to give us the desires of our hearts. And so many times I don't think we stop to think about praying for even the silly things that we think he doesn't care about. And so our house finally got foundation and it finally got some walls up. And I told my husband, I said, we are going to go and we're going to walk around this thing like Jericho. And, and so just boldly believing God's going to do the things that, that he says he's going to do, you know, and fulfill the promises that he says. And not in a prosperity gospel kind of way. Like, I don't
[00:07:19] Jessica: want people
[00:07:20] Donna: to think that. That I'm like, oh, if I do this, God's going to do this. But I just. God has us here to live boldly and to live for Him. And I think so many times in our prayer life, we don't seek him that way. We go to him, but we don't believe that he's going to show up.
[00:07:35] Jessica: Yeah, absolutely. And I think there's something so personal about being specific with their prayers instead of being so broad with them. And like you said, being bold instead of asking God just to bless everything and everyone, you actually bringing him very specific things. Because I do believe that he wants to bless, you know, all of the things and show us. And just because we don't pray for it specifically doesn't mean that he won't bless it, but it does mean that we can be now in alignment with him when we are praying these specific things. And I think that that's something that you've been learning to do differently in your own conversations with him as well.
[00:08:13] Donna: Absolutely. I think, you know, I look at them as blanket prayers versus specific prayers because, you know, it's easy to get up and go, okay, God, bless my family and be with, you know, so and so during their illness and, you know, heal this person, you know, but if you go and believe, like, you know, I've even over our daughter, I'm like, God, I am believing in you to make this a healthy, viable pregnancy. I am. I am believing in you to, you know, do great things with, you know, in her and with this baby and strengthen marriages and, you know, and, and really specifically ask for every little thing that you want. He knows the desires of our hearts, but he wants our. He wants the relationship with us more than he.
He doesn't need us to ask him. Like, he knows our desires. He just wants us so badly to sit in his presence.
[00:08:59] Jessica: He invites us, and I love that he wants to have that relationship with us, that he does invite us to come in and ask for all of those things, even talks about in Matthew, to ask and seek and knock and it will be done to it. Like he's saying, come to me continually, come to me. And I think it's just so beautiful that we do have that relationship that he has invited us into and that we don't have to approach him like we're bothering him with our requests or our prayers, but that he wants to hear from us just like, you know, your father wants to hear from you. It's, It's. It's so beautiful. So how has scripture, or even that scripture really changed the way that you see God when it comes to those important things?
[00:09:43] Donna: You know, it. It goes back to. To truly believing he's going to do what he says he's going to do and knowing that all I have to do is ask. Now, let's be honest, like, he's not going to give me everything that I want the way I want it. You know, I'm so grateful he did not give me some of the boys that I dated in high school that I thought, you know, end of the world, like, these are them.
I'm so grateful he didn't answer those.
So in the moment, we might leave feeling disappointed if we don't feel God answered specifically. But when you can stop and you can be on the other side and you look at the beautiful things that he did, you know, years ago, my husband lost his job in corporate America. I didn't think
[00:10:21] Jessica: it
[00:10:21] Donna: was the greatest thing, you know, that happened to us. But now when I can look back on it and I'm like, man, God, you sure do know what you're doing. And I'm grateful for
[00:10:29] Jessica: it. So how in. In the. The asking for the bold prayers and trusting him, but also surrendering that we won't know all the answers, how are you learning to balance that bold asks and trusting God when he doesn't always give us what we have asked for?
[00:10:46] Donna: I think it goes back to the trust, right? Like, we have to trust that father knows best. Like, he. He knows he has the plan all lined out. And when we go our own way, when we don't listen to his promptings, it's easy to veer off course, but we're still going to end up where he eventually wants us if we, if we lean back into him. And so it's trusting that he knows best. And even when it doesn't go the way that my spoiled heart wants it to go all the time, but believing that he. He wants the best for me and that I. There's nothing I can do that that would change his love for me. And so just like I would for my own kids, right? Like, we want the best for our kids and we always, sometimes have to tell them no or we don't give them exactly what they want and hope one day they'll, they'll understand that our no was really an act of love.
[00:11:38] Jessica: Exactly. Because he wants to hear from us, but he can't give us everything that we ask for because it's not aligned with his will. And I love that. Even in the scriptures he tells us that he's like, I'm going to give you the things that align with my will.
Hopefully your heart is aligned with mine so that we can both be on the same page. So, so sorry. That was. Right. I apologize.
[00:12:01] Donna: Okay,
[00:12:02] Jessica: so I'd love to hear how you are becoming more intentional in this, in the way that your prayers have changed and how you're noticing God in the ordinary moments of your day. Because we all, we love to talk about practicality here. And I think that our friend listening would love to know what does this look like in, in your everyday life?
[00:12:21] Donna: I think it's being aware of what, what your prayers are because a lot of times, you know, you get into a prayer and, and I hate to say it, but, you know, you, okay, I'm going to spend my hour with God this morning. And so you spend that hour of time with him and then you, you get going so fast and you get so busy that you quit looking at, you know, all the little God weeks throughout the day. And you know, whether it's the sunrise or, you know, I, I, I, someone that people have laughed at me because when I do my quiet time in the morning, I look out my window and I can see the sun come up. And when the sun peeks over the houses, I'm like, there you are. You know, I'm like, God, there you are. You came to see me today.
You know, and so there's little bitty everyday moments that we take for granted. And I just, I think that we, we get in our prayer time in the morning, we get so busy, we forget what we asked, we forget what we talked about.
And I think it's, it's really going back to that, praying continuously. And I know it sounds, this sounds really cheesy, but I've actually set timers on my phone to kind of remind me to hey, stop and thank God, stop and just check in. I'll start at 5 and then, you know, maybe at 10 that morning after I get going, it's just a quick reminder of, hey, check in with God. And so then, you know, I'll be like, oh.
And then around 2 and then around 5 and so just Those continual reminders to make a habit eventually to say, hey, God's still here, he's still with me. And, and just a check in. And then when I see those things, when I see kindness somewhere or you know, it might not be God, it could completely be circumstance. I mean, you know, somebody lets me in, well, thank you God. You know, I find a parking space. Thank you God.
Just being grateful in, in all things and finding a way to thank him.
[00:14:10] Jessica: Yeah. And I think that speaks to relationship more than a checklist because you are noticing those things. And sometimes we do have to have it on our schedule and have a timer because we're just not used to it. And the more that we do it, the more that it just naturally becomes part of what we do and then we notice it at all times about all of the things, which is so beautiful. But I love that you said that you have an alarm because I think that some people think, well, if I have to have an alarm then is it, does it mean it's real? Well, yes, it's still real. He knows your heart. And sometimes we just need that reminder because a lot can happen between 5am and 10am that you need to pray for.
And sometimes we're just going go and go and we just talked about this before we even push record that you know, there's a lot going on in our lives and sometimes we do need to just have that breath of time with the Lord and reminder. And so thank you for sharing that because I really hope that our friend hears that it's okay to set a timer. If that's what you need, that's okay.
[00:15:16] Donna: So when my daughter was little, she, her brain hadn't and her bladder did not develop at the same time. And so she honestly in first grade had no idea when she had to go to the bathroom. And so we were constantly having accidents. So we got her a potty watch and every hour on the hour that watch went off to remind her to go to the bathroom. And so when
[00:15:37] Jessica: I
[00:15:37] Donna: started thinking about the whole timing, you know, putting a timer to when I pray, God made her little body right. Like he, he doesn't make mistakes. And she needed a timer to remember to go to the bathroom. So
[00:15:49] Jessica: yeah,
[00:15:50] Donna: that's not too far fetched to think, you know what, my brain sometimes doesn't catch up to my prayer life and I
[00:15:56] Jessica: get
[00:15:57] Donna: so consumed with the things of this world that if need to stop and intentionally set a timer to remind me to go back to the father, then he's created the things for me. To be able to do that. And so that's how I look at that. I, I don't think of it as a. It's a tool. It's a tool for me to draw close to the father.
[00:16:14] Jessica: Exactly. Yes. I love it. I love it so much. So, speaking of alarms. So you said that you're not normally a morning person. I'm going back to thinking about this 5am thing because I too am not a morning person. And so you, you've been doing this. As somebody who understands the struggle of that, because 5am just sounds terrible, I need to know, tell us about the first few mornings because I imagine that getting out of your very warm, nice bed isn't easy. But I think that it's important to, to hear the, that it isn't. It isn't necessarily the time on the clock that it's, you're making that intentional time with God. And that's, you know, another part of that timing process.
[00:16:57] Donna: So when I, when I first did it years ago, I was very stressed out about it because I knew these people were going to be on the group me. And if I wasn't there,
[00:17:06] Jessica: yeah,
[00:17:06] Donna: I was going to look, you know, like I was, didn't have my things together. I was completely, I wasn't being respectful of their time. And it was, I was like, this is ridiculous. This time around, my alarm goes up at 5 o' clock and I check in on the, on the group me with a good morning.
[00:17:21] Jessica: Yeah.
[00:17:22] Donna: I stumble downstairs to get my coffee. I get my coffee, I come back and I get in my chair and I probably don't even start my prayer time until about 5:15, 5:20, right after brushing my teeth and getting everything.
[00:17:33] Jessica: Yeah.
[00:17:34] Donna: And it isn't just, it isn't so much about the time. Some of our women have actually said, you know what, I might, I do better at, you know, at 5pm but they'll still join us and they still check
[00:17:46] Jessica: in
[00:17:46] Donna: and tell us what God, you know, what God did in their time.
I truly believe that you've got to do what works for you in your prayer life. Like if you're not a morning person and you and your juices don't get going until, you know, later on in the day. And you can find that time to make sure you dedicate it. It's the intentionality behind putting in.
[00:18:06] Jessica: Right.
[00:18:06] Donna: Putting that time in place.
And I personally, I found in my writing and those kind of things I do better in the morning. And once, you know, the afternoon foggies hit, I'm like, what did I write. What did I say is, you know, I just need to not be doing anything that takes a lot of extra effort at that point. So for me,
[00:18:25] Jessica: exactly
[00:18:26] Donna: as hard as it is to get out of bed, I have found myself craving that time with him. The closer I have gotten to him. Even this morning, we were on kind of a little break for a little bit and I was like, I'm going to keep doing 5ish. And this morning I got up at like 3 o' clock in the morning to go to the restroom and then I was like, oh. And then I felt the Lord say, okay, get up at 5. And I was like, oh. And, and you know what? I didn't. And I'm being just flat out honest. I was 5, 15 rolled around and I was like, I could, I could get out of bed. And then my hubby rolled over and snuggled with me and I fell back asleep and I wasn't until 7 o'. Clock. And you know, and then
[00:19:04] Jessica: I
[00:19:04] Donna: got in my time with the Lord. And I don't think that God was disappointed in the fact that I slept two more hours. I spent time with him anyway, you know, I didn't listen to my Holy Spirit prompt, you know, five o'. Clock. I kind of ignored him a little bit. But I'm just being honest, you know, I mean, I. Sometimes I think we all do that in hindsight.
[00:19:25] Jessica: Yeah.
[00:19:25] Donna: And, but, but I'm. But I'm grateful that he speaks to me. Right. And, and like a child, we don't, they don't always listen. We don't always listen.
[00:19:33] Jessica: Right.
[00:19:34] Donna: But he still talks to me and he still wants me to be with him. So.
[00:19:39] Jessica: Yeah. And that's. That, that relationship again is that even though it didn't work out, you realize that that did not happen. Lord, I'm sorry. I, you know, I, I'm. I'm still here for you. It's not. You went well, I missed five o'. Clock. Might as well skip it till next day. But because you are used to this time and you want to spend that time with him. I mean, when you, when you love being around someone, you want to spend more time with them. And I think that that, that change in our minds, in our hearts, actually changes the way that we approach the quiet time with him. The. Instead of making it a checklist of, okay, well, I got it done. And it sounds, it sounds like, it sounds like your time is more precious than just checking off a box. And maybe that's changed since the first time you did this 5am devotional and so is there any, has there been anything that has surprised you the most about doing these early morning devotionals?
[00:20:39] Donna: That I enjoy them. Right. Like, you know, at first it was, it felt like a chore. It felt like a.
I was doing it to be a part of something else to. And. But yet the quality time I get with him, you know, when we talk about love languages, right, you talk about all these different love languages. And I really do believe that, that. And I actually wrote something not too long ago. But if God had a love language, it would be quality time. That's
[00:21:07] Jessica: what
[00:21:07] Donna: he wants from us. And so I think that that's what I value is that quality time with him and the stillness and the, the peace that I get when I just sit in his presence. And sometimes it's overwhelming. There's mornings that I'm like, why am I crying, Lord? You know, and then there's mornings, it's like, oh, I get it now, God. And it's just so sweet. It's sacred time.
[00:21:31] Jessica: Yeah, it is sacred. And I think it's easier when you can get up early in the mornings because you can be up before most people. I know when I had littles, that was almost impossible because every single time that I would wake up early, they would wake up earlier and then it was just pushing it back more and more. And that, that was not working for me. And so I realized, you know, what, we're going to sleep in and then I can have my, you know, my prayer, solitude, quiet time with them sitting right beside me. And that's what worked in that season. And you know, we talked about seasons, right? That's what worked for me in that season. So I don't think that every, every Christian needs to get up at 5am However, I love how Jesus talks about it in Mark that he rose up early, he went to a solitary place and he prayed. And it wasn't just to mark it off, but he made that, like you said, intentional time to have that peace and that quiet and get to know his father even more.
And that's what he's asking from us. And not necessarily a specific time of day, but it's the priority that we make of him in that time.
[00:22:38] Donna: Yes, I think for me, like, right, if I get up once, once the sun comes up, my phone is buzzing, I've got emails coming in, I've got phone calls happening, my husband's eating something.
So by the time that all comes around, I never get back to it. Which is why I need timers to remember
[00:22:55] Jessica: to
[00:22:55] Donna: Pray. But when I wake up at 5am and I sit in my chair, nobody needs me. And it's truly all about me and God. And I think that's what I love is it just, it's just peaceful, it's quiet and I can really hear him, whereas the noise drowns him out later in the day. So you just have to know yourself. You have to know what works for you. You have to know when are you the most alert and when can you hear him best?
[00:23:20] Jessica: Exactly. Yeah, absolutely. And you're right. I love that some of your 5am or 5am People are doing a 5pm Which I super appreciate that it's still a 5, because. 5, 5, 5.
But that's when it works for her. And that, that's beautiful that she's still taking that time. And so I'd love to, to bring in our friend for this and, and give her some practicality in this. And maybe she is, maybe she's just beginning her time with the Lord or she wants to start up that time and she doesn't have a lot of time and she's in a season where she doesn't know even know what to say, what is what, what suggestions or advice could you give her that help her to know that she, when she does that, she's not just going through the motions.
[00:24:08] Donna: So years ago, when I first became, years ago, when I first became a Christian, I had a dear elderly woman tell me, donna, it doesn't matter where you start. Start with five minutes, you
[00:24:20] Jessica: know,
[00:24:20] Donna: start, you know, and, but, but if you, when you bump it up, never go back, but make sure it's an intentional time with him. And so, you know, my husband teases me because he's like, don't be upstairs spending, you know, hours with Jesus. And, you know, and, and he'll tell people that. And I'm like, I'm no super Christian. It's just like you said earlier, when you enjoy being around somebody, the more time you want to spend with them. And so, you know, when I first started studying the Bible, when I first started really getting into His Word, it would be, you know, a small devotional. And I think about, oh, well, okay, how does that apply to me today?
And then I'd go on, but it was still intentional time. My heart was in the right place. And so I would tell our friend that might be listening that if they're just trying to figure out, you know, who this God is and what does a quiet time look like?
1, find the best time that works for you. Where can you have a few moments, and heck, it might be in the bathroom where your kids won't follow you. I don't know. But whatever that looks like, that's okay.
And two, one, I would also say find a Bible that, that you understand, because a lot of times you see people trying to pick up a kjv and they're like, I don't get it. And I'm like, I don't get that either.
[00:25:32] Jessica: I don't either.
[00:25:34] Donna: So find. Find scripture that a devotion, a translation, or a version that speaks to you, because it'll make it easier to fall in love with Jesus when you understand what he's saying and then just start somewhere. You don't. It doesn't have to be eloquent. He doesn't want eloquent words. He doesn't need big, churchy words. He just wants your heart. So just talk to him. Journal, if that's the best way that you feel you can connect. But find. There's a book out there. It's called Sacred Pathways. Have you read that one?
[00:26:00] Jessica: I haven't.
[00:26:01] Donna: It's phenomenal. And it talks about how everyone connects to Jesus, how we worship differently. And so it could be through.
It could be through music, because a lot of times we think of worship with music. It can be through journaling. It could be nature. It could be. So where do you feel most connected to God and do that? And so not everybody is going to be the same. The way. Jessica, the way that you worship God is probably different than the way I worship God and the way that I feel closest to him and so hone in on where you feel closest to him and do that.
[00:26:32] Jessica: That's beautiful. Donna. Thank you so much for being here. I. I love that this conversation isn't us just talking about finding perfect words and, and, you know, sticking to our. Our corners, but really it's all about relationship. And when we have a relationship with the Lord, we want to be close to Him. And Jesus invites us, he, to. To ask Him. And scriptures encourage us to pray. Pray continually, and bring thanksgiving and notice all of the things that the Lord is doing. And so I'm so thankful that you were here that we could talk about this, because it's so, so, so important.
So before we wrap up, I want to ask you one last question that I ask every guest on the podcast. And that is, what is one perspective that you would encourage listeners to apply today?
[00:27:18] Donna: You know, it's just. It's a. It's actually a quote that I heard years ago from someone, and it stuck with me. And it's be where your feet are. And
[00:27:27] Jessica: I just,
[00:27:27] Donna: I absolutely love that quote because every moment is sacred, Every moment is important, and every person you come in contact with is important. And so whether you're sitting in your chair talking to Jesus or you're talking to someone at the grocery store, be where your feet are. Be a hundred percent there. Because that minute is a gift. And you never know if you might be the only Jesus somebody sees today.
[00:27:55] Jessica: Yeah, that's exactly right. I love that. Thank you so much, friend. Maybe today is an opportunity to look at your own prayer life. Are you bringing your actual heart before him? Are you making room to spend time with him? And are you willing to trust him even when his answers don't look like what you're hoping for? Just a reminder. You don't have to wake up at 5am or find the perfect words. You can begin right where you are. Just talk to him, open up his scriptures and make room to listen when he's there to talk.
